MAROOCHYDORE - The FutureNumerous residential, commercial and retail developments have been planned for the Maroochydore region, with the area marked as the Sunshine Coast’s future Principal Activity Centre. Sunshine Plaza ExpansionWhile the Maroochydore area is already home to a number of retail precincts, the popular Sunshine Plaza shopping centre is the largest retail precinct in the Sunshine Coast region and is set to become bigger and better in the coming years. In December 2010, Sunshine Plaza was granted development approval for a second department store in the complex as part of the revised State Government-approved Maroochydore CBD structure plan. Retail giant David Jones is now working with development managers from Sunshine Plaza to obtain council approval for the company’s application to fill this space. The proposal has received strong support from the local business community and, if approved, will act as a major drawcard for shoppers across the Sunshine Coast Horton Park Golf CourseThe current Horton Park Golf Course stretches over 53 hectares of land in the centre of Maroochydore. Sunshine Coast Council purchased the land in early 2011 and as part of the Maroochydore Principal Activity Centre (PAC) Structure Plan, the site will form a significant part of the Maroochydore CBD and ultimately become the major business and economic heart of the entire Sunshine Coast region. According to the plan, 40 per cent of the land will be used as landscaped open space, with the remainder housing residential and commercial development including shops, offices and apartments. Maroochydore as the Sunshine Coast’s Principal Activity CentreThe Maroochydore PAC Structure Plan was developed by Sunshine Coast Council in consultation with the local public and business sector and proposes a framework for integrated land use and infrastructure development for approximately 200 hectares of land located in the heart of Maroochydore. The plan has been designed in line with the cherished Sunshine Coast lifestyle, ensuring the vibrant cultural and business centre remains true to authentic Sunshine Coast values. According to the plan, the mixed-use space will allocate 65,000 square metres of new retail floor space and 150,000 square metres of new commercial floor space by 2031. It will also incorporate 4,000 new residential dwellings and proposes a transit plaza, regional arts and entertainment centre, library, public amphitheatre and civic plaza be constructed as part of the Maroochydore CBD.
